The High Street has a wide range of shops and eating places including many independently owned coffee shops which provide good opportunity to stop relax and watch the world go by. There are several pubs and restaurants for lunch or evening meals.
St Peter’s Church at the Marlborough College end of the High Street serves coffees, teas and lunches and the Craft shop inside is well worth a visit. The High Street is also home to the Merchant House, one of the finest 17th century homes open to visitors in the country.
Marlborough College situated at the West end of the town has many famous alumni namely John Betjeman, and more recently Kate Middleton who is now Duchess of Cambridge . More on Marlborough here
Wiltshire is famous for its chalk hills and carved White Horses several of which can be viewed around the Marlborough area. The Ridgeway National Trail starts nearby - the trail is 87 miles (139km) in length and takes you through stunning, unspoilt Wiltshire countryside.
Only a short ride away is the pretty village of Lacock, where the Cranford Chronicles, parts of Harry Potter and The Other Boleyn were filmed. Lacock village, its Abbey and the Fox Talbot Museum are all owned by the National Trust.
Marlborough is an ideal base from which to visit Salisbury, Bath, Oxford and The Cotswolds with the M4 less than 20 minutes away. A half hour car ride gets you to Swindon, where you can find the famous Steam Museum which takes you through the story of the Great Western Railway and situated next to it - imaginatively built into the old GWR great engine workshops is the popular and well visited Swindon Designer Outlet where over 90 top name retailers and stores sell a range of fashion and goods with up to 60% discount off RRP.
